This night was a good lesson...but maybe not the most exciting in 2nd and 3rd grade...prime numbers...the Number Devil referred to them as "Prima-Donna" numbers. THis was a tough concept for everyone to wrap their heads around...but they began to understand the premise and even part of the purpose.

This night was more interesting...Square Roots (rutabagas),Recurring Decimals...

This brought some interesting ideas to the surface. 1/3 as a fraction...as a decimal this becomes 0.3333333....'til the cows come home'. So if 1/3+1/3+1/3=3/3 or 1, then what about 0.33333333...+0.33333333...+0.33333333...=0.99999999999....is that the same a 1?

The 5th Night:

Triangular numbers!! FUN!!!

This 5th night brought forth not only the triangular numbers, but next the square numbers...which was great for 3rd graders that had just studied area. This was a great connection back to the 'hopping numbers' that were working w

]]>MCMLXXXVI or in more familiar format: 1986...We learned about the Roman numeral system and it's one great deficiency...they did not have Zero. For years and years I have taught using number lines and enjoyed sharing the old Schoolhouse Rocks videos...who remembers "Zero my hero"? This became amazingly apparent (the hero part) when the Number Devil explains the need for zero. Let's say that zero was absent...and your problem was 1-2=? Without the Zero the number line would show that the answer is -2 !! That shows that there is something missing...a missing number...ZERO!

The second part of the chapter takes us into powers...exponents. The Number Devil describes hopping numbers...basically instead of writing out: 2x2x2x2x2x2=64 you can write 2 to the 6th power and get there faster. This expands to fives and then to tens...before the conclusion and the Number Devil's temper tantrum.

At the end Robert (our under dog) is asked to "produce" the number 1986. This brings up expanded notation and Robert begins with 6X1=6 and 8x10=80 then 9x100-900 and finally 1x1000=1000...altogether 6+80+900+1000=1986...he has "produced" the number 1986.

Then the Number Devil presents 1's in yet another fashion in creating the rest of the digits we currently use. This begins with 1x1=1, then 11x11=121...there being created the number 2...all from using 1's. 111x111=12321, 1111x1111=1234321, 11111x11111=123454321, and the pattern continues until 111111111x111111111=12345678987654321...thus creating all the digits one through nine all from the use of just 1's. This is as far as we have gotten in the book...not quite to the end of chapter one (The First Night), but we will continue and find more patterns, gain more number sense, and maybe....just maybe have a little fun!!!]]>
